| Tampa Bay drafted Smith in the third-round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Akron University.
Smith (5-10, 201), who possesses strong instincts and is a referred to by some as a "ballhawk", will compete for playing time at the nickel position in 2002.
Smith tied for the NCAA lead in interceptions with 10 during his senior year at Akron.
Smith returned 16 kickoffs and averaged 22.2 yards per return during his rookie season in 2001 before being removed from the job.
Smith doesn't have blazing speed, but he does possess power and good field vision. Smith rebounded from a confidence standpoint later in 2001 by leading the team in special teams tackles with 22.
