Many people expected the Raiders to take offensive tackle Bruce Campbell in the first round, after his impressive Combine performance. But the Raiders were patient, did their homework, and were able to draft the athletic lineman in the fourth round.

With the 106th overall pick, the Raiders picked the player most had pegged as the team’s first round pick. Offensive tackle Bruce Campbell comes to Oakland from the fourth round, after most had projected him to go anywhere in the first two rounds.

Campbell was rated the fourth best offensive tackle in the draft, according to’s rankings. However, it is obvious that many teams were not convinced he was a legitimate prospect purely based on his outstanding performance at the NFL Combine.

Campbell measured in at 6-7, 314-lbs., but still managed to run the 40-yard dash in 4.85 seconds, the fastest ever for an offensive lineman at the Combine. Campbell also put up 34 repetitions in the bench press and his arm length was measured at 36”. 34” is considered the ideal arm length for linemen.

However, it was Campbell’s lack of experience and issues of durability that most likely hurt his draft stock. In three years at Maryland, Campbell played in 27 games, but only has 17 starts to his credit.

He’s still considered very raw at this stage in his development, but based on his physical attributes, Campbell is viewed as a player who has a high ceiling and can develop into an elite left tackle in the NFL.

The pick might be viewed as somewhat of a victory for the Raiders, after many suspected they would take Campbell with the eighth overall pick. Instead, the Raiders addressed their needs on the defensive front, selecting linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Lamarr Houston in the first and second round, respectively. Cable revealed, yesterday, that the team planned to use Houston at defensive end. The Raiders picked Hillsdale College offensive tackle Jared Veldheer in the third round.
