Raiders Acquire Groves for 5th Rounder

The Raiders announced today that the team has acquired defensive end Quentin Groves from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Raiders send one of their 5th round picks to the Jaguars in the deal. The acquisition of Groves is yet another move to bolster the team's pass rush and add youth to the roster.

The Raiders acquired former 2nd round pick Quentin Groves from the Jacksonville Jaguars today, on what is the eve of the first round of the NFL Draft.

The news was first reported via Groves' Twitter account at 1:12 P.M. (PST):
"Duval County…. I LOVE U GUYS…thanks for all your support…New Starts=New Beginnings…OAKLAND HERE I COME!!!!"
Both the Jaguars and the Raiders later confirmed the trade through their websites. The Jaguars receive one of the Raiders two 5th round picks. The Raiders owned both the 138th and 158th picks, but neither team has yet to say which was part of the deal.

Groves entered the league as the 52nd overall pick in 2008, after four stellar seasons at Auburn University. At 6-3 and 264-lbs., Groves is listed as a defensive end, but has the speed and athleticism to play outside linebacker.

Groves has been a disappointment thus far in his career, having compiled only 2.5 sacks and 35 total tackles in 32 games played. The hope is that Groves can get a fresh start with a Raiders defense that's been sorely lacking in a consistent pass rush.

The Raiders acquired Kamerion Wimbley from the Cleveland Browns on March 14th, and according to Head Coach Tom Cable, Wimbley will start at strongside linebacker. Groves, like Wimbley, is considered a hybrid defender, able to play defensive end and linebacker as a pass rushing specialist.

It will be interesting to see how Groves will be used and where he will fit into the depth chart, although from the looks of it he figures to challenge for the defensive end spot opposite Richard Seymour. Second-year man Matt Shaughnessy was the likely starter before the Groves acquisition. Jay Richardson and Greyson Gunheim fill out the depth chart.
