Still no move on Walker

Despite a report earlier this week that the Raiders had already released Javon Walker as part of their run to get under the salary cap, the veteran wide receiver remained on the team’s roster as of mid-day Wednesday and there’s still no indication his status will change.

While the list of players already let go by Oakland is a lengthy one -- tackle Kwame Harris, fullback Justin Griffith, defensive end Kalimba Edwards, safety Gibril Wilson and wide receiver Ronald Curry -- Walker’s name has yet to be added.

And while the Raiders haven’t entirely ruled out a move with Walker -- “Nothing has happened … yet,” is how member of the front office termed the situation -- it seems increasingly as if Walker will stay.

Oakland has already cleared up enough room to get under the cap, and although they’ll need some more space in order to sign their draft picks, it’s conceivable Walker’s deal could be left untouched. And if he and Al Davis have as good a relationship as it seems, Walker may even agree to restructure his deal.

The same site that reported Walker had been cut has backtracked and is now saying the Raiders are divided over whether to keep him or not. The debate apparently is over whether Walker has anything left in the tank after two straight injury-plagued seasons.

It’s a legitimate argument, especially with Oakland’s two young wide receivers Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens making significant impacts last year.

But I doubt there’s really much debate going on. It really comes down to whether Davis wants to continue clearing house of the underachievers on his roster or if he wants to give Walker another chance to be the explosive receiver he was earlier in his career.
