Raiders get busy in free agency

The Raiders were one of the more active teams during the first few days of free agency, a good sign for a team that spent the better part of the offseason fending off rumors of a feud between head coach Lane Kiffin and owner Al Davis.

Oakland’s most recent move was the signing of safety Gibril Wilson, who has been a starter for the past four seasons with the New York Giants.

Wilson almost certainly will become an immediate starter with the Raiders, who have been unhappy with the play of their safeties for the past few years. Oakland has already toyed with the idea of moving Michael Huff to free safety, meaning Wilson will likely inherit Huff’s strong safety spot.

That would leave Stuart Schweigert, the team’s starting free safety since 2005, as the odd man out.

Wilson led the Giants with four interceptions and was second in tackles (92) despite missing three games with a knee injury.

The Raiders also brought in free agent defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban and tackle Kwame Harris for workouts. The team needs to fill holes vacated by the departures of Chris Clemons -- who signed with Philadelphia -- and left tackle Barry Sims, who was released by the team last week.

Jerry Porter’s decision to sign with Jacksonville frees the Raiders up from having to give him a hefty new contract. It also rids the team of a classic underachiever, a player who failed to garner a 1,000-yard season during his time in Oakland.

Now he goes to Jacksonville where he’s likely to be the Jags’ No. 1 receiver. While Porter is an incredibly gifted athletic specimen, he never panned out with the Raiders. He had a huge game against Denver and All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey a few years back but performances like that were few and far between.
