Playing for a roster spot

Defensive end Derrick Burgess is increasing his reps in practice but the Raiders want to be cautious with their two-time Pro Bowl defensive end. That's why Burgess, along with running back LaMont Jordan, will be held out of Saturday's preseason opener against Arizona.

"I just don't want to put Derrick out there right now," Oakland coach Lane Kiffin said. "He's only been back for a couple days and it's not worth it to put him out there full speed right now. We've got three more games after this."

Burgess opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing hernia surgery in the offseason. He returned to practice earlier this week but was held out of most team contact drills.

He did spend a few plays with the starting defense on Wednesday but spent most of the morning practice as a spectator. In his place, the Raiders have been using the combination of veterans Chris Clemons, Kevin Huntley and fifth-round draft pick Jay Richardson.

Jordan, who aggravated a lower back injury early in camp, will also skip the Arizona game, as will defensive tackle Josh Shaw (knee). Recommended Stories
