Oakland to hire Lofton?
James Lofton (April 2006)

Posted Jan 16, 2007

The Oakland Raiders are reportedly closing on a deal that would bring James Lofton, currently the wide receivers' coach of the San Diego Chargers, into the fold as their new head coach.

James Lofton, who was a finalist for Stanford's head coach's job, came to Oakland for the second time in as many years on Tuesday to interview for the vacant head coaching position in Oakland.

After having a positive interview with Al Davis last year, Lofton being brought back sent signals that the interview process a year ago went well.

Lofton, 50, was a Hall of Fame wide receiver who finished his career with 764 catches for 14,004 yards and 75 touchdowns. He played in three Super Bowls.

Thought to be a bright, emerging head coaching candidate, Lofton just finished his fifth season in San Diego. He has no prior head coaching experience.

According to the Union Tribune, the Raiders and Lofton were working on the details of a contract.
