Doug Gabriel caught 25 passes for 344 yards with three touchdowns for the Patriots in 12 games, including five starts.
Things were never the same for Gabriel after he lost a crucial fumble in the Patriots loss to the Jets. He caught just one pass over the next four games.
"Doug is insurance for us right now," coach Art Shell said, referring to Randy Moss' questionable status for Sunday's game against St. Louis and Jerry Porter's injured hip. "So, that's where we are with that. I don't know if we'd have made that move if those guys all were healthy and ready to go."
The wideout caught 37 passes for 554 yards with three touchdowns while playing for the Raiders in 2005 and has 96 receptions over four seasons, including 2006.
