Raiders select safety Michael Huff

With the seventh pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected University of Texas safety Michael Huff.

Michael Huff is a safety that can also play cornerback and with the Raiders managing just five interceptions last season, Huff represents a pick that fills a serious need.

With any luck, the pick of Huff will pan out better than many of their choices since 2001. They have selected a defensive back with their first round pick in five of the last six drafts coming in.

The former Texas defensive back played free safety, strong safety and cornerback during his stint with the Longhorns. While the majority of his time was spent at safety, he did spend a year at corner, practicing against wide receiver Roy Williams, a first round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2004.

At 6-foot and 205 pounds, Huff is one of the fastest players in the draft. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds, nearly as fast as Clemson cornerback Tye Hill, who’s three inches shorter and 21 pounds lighter.

As a senior last season, he recorded 109 tackles, 10 for losses, two sacks, 14 pass deflections and one interception.
