8/16 Raiders notebook

The Oakland Raiders added another punter in lieu of Shane Lechler's slight hamstring strain sustained in Saturday's 21-13 exhibition loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Lechler is not likely going to play when the Oakland Raiders visit the Houston Texans Saturday. Lechler is listed as week-to-week. Gary Cook replaced Lechler as the punter.

Oakland signed Bryce Benekos, who is a rookie out of UTEP. Benekos signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers before being released. Benekos averaged 42.1 yards per punt in his career and was a first-team all-WAC selection as a senior.

QB rotation

With No. 3 quarterback Andrew Walter sustaining a slight groin strain Monday, David Rivers slides into that role and will follow Kerry Collins and Marques Tuiasosopo.

Raiders head coach Norv Turner said the team will likely come to a decision Wednesday on his status for Saturday's game at Houston. Turner is hopeful that Walter can return to practice Thursday when the team will have its joint practices with the Texans.

No ordinary but animated Joe

It's never a surprise to see Raiders special teams coach Joe Avezzano get animated and Tuesday afternoon was no different.

Among the individual players he chided most were rookie linebacker Ryan Riddle and defensive lineman Kenny Smith, who is the long snapper in place of the injured Adam Treu. A handful of Smith's snaps sailed high.

Avezzano had a few barbs that included adult language but among the PG-13 ones were: "God-dammit, I can only do it calmly so many times!" and "If I wanted you to jog, I'd have you go back and loosen up!"

Push and shove

Much has been made of the idea about nothing remotely close to a fight taking place during training camp.

There was not one on Tuesday but for a rare time there was a little pushing and shoving but nothing serious. Defensive end Grant Irons and tight end James Adkisson shoved each other back-and-forth a few times as Brad Lekkerkerker intervened before things got too heated.

Courtney the dad

Raiders projected starting tight end Courtney Anderson missed the afternoon practice but he had a good reason. Anderson's girlfriend, Terina, gave birth to a baby boy. Turner said that Anderson would likely play Saturday at Houston.
