Gallery needs to be in the lineup -- somewhere

Posted Sep 14, 2004

There’s one of many things that the Oakland Raiders 24-21 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers said -- find a spot for Robert Gallery sooner rather than later.

The Oakland Raiders selected Gallery, an offensive tackle, with the second overall pick in the draft from the University of Iowa. The Raiders drafted Gallery initially with the idea of replacing Barry Sims at left tackle. Sims has been the starting left tackle since 1999 and was slated to move inside to guard.

Sims, however, answered the challenge by playing well enough at left tackle to hold the job. Gallery has since gotten work at left guard and right tackle. Gallery did not start Sunday’s game but entered late in the second quarter for right tackle Langston Walker and later went in at left guard for Frank Middleton.

The question becomes, when does Gallery become a starter? And why put off the inevitable? Many scouts believe that Gallery is a lot like Orlando Pace, Tony Boselli and Jonathan Ogden in that you can pencil him into the lineup at left tackle and keep him there for say 10 or 15 years. The point being, why wait? Sideline slants

-- Jerry Rice extended his streak to 274 consecutive games with at least one catch but received far less playing time as the game progressed. Could he be playing the “lesser role” that Tim Brown did not want?

-- The Raiders want to feature the power-running game under first-year head coach Norv Turner. So far the ground game is more like the “grounded game.” One can say it is safe to say that 22 carries for 61 yards won’t get it done.

-- Tight end Courtney Anderson, who was one of two seventh round draft choices by Oakland, entered the game on the second play. That can’t possibility bode well for Teyo Johnson, a second-round draft pick last season.
