The Oakland Raiders continued their practice under second year head
coach Bill Callahan of spotting veterans
an occasional day off in order to preserve them.
Wide receivers Tim Brown and Jerry Rice along with safety Rod Woodson,
linebacker Bill Romanowski and running back Tyrone Wheatley were held out of the
morning practice.
“I think from past experience history tells you that the success we’ve
had in treating training camp a little more intelligently than most people has
paid dividends for this team,” Callahan said.
A new No. 81
There’s been a lot of talk
that Jerry Porter, who wears No. 84, will take the place of Brown, who wears No.
81, in terms of production. Read into it what you wish but Porter was sporting
the No. 81 in the morning practice.
Pickin’ and grinnin’
Charles Woodson intercepted a pass from backup quarterback Marques
Tuiasosopo in the morning practice.
It hurts
WR Scottie Montgomery (ankle) and CB Phillip Buchanon (hamstring)
returned to practice Monday. QB Rick Mirer, who has been slowed by an Achilles
injury, continues to work slowly back into the mix. WR Ryan Hoag, G-T Joe Wong
(back), LB Donny Green (calf), CB Nnamdi Asomugha (shoulder) and CB Clarence
Love (ankle) are still out. Callahan added that Love should return shortly.
