The New York Giants have went from a team off to a slow start, to just a terrible team. For the past two weeks, the Giants have changed some people’s opinions of them and some even believe they can keep their winning ways going and win the NFC East Division crown. One Giant though missed a step from his pro bowl season in 2012.
“He has been tremendous”, said Giants wide receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride on Cruz’s play so far this season.”
Cruz has 47 catches for 677 yards and 4 touchdowns so far this season, all of them team highs. However, Gilbride insists that Cruz’s stats aren’t the only reason why he has had such a good year so far, adding that some it has come is Cruz’s role in the Giants running game.
“He has been tremendous and I’m not just talking about the passing game,” noted Gilbride. “In the running game he is blocking his butt off and coming down and blocking safeties to the point where he never used to do these things last season for me although I would push him and push him and push him towards it. Now he’s been very competitive and tough getting his nose dirty in there and its helped our team.”
Cruz’s blocking improvements have come from his extra work in the offseason. Gilbride said Cruz came in the training camp stronger and ready to develop all areas of his game.
“He looked great coming in,” said Gilbride of Cruz. “When we saw him when he came in to sign last year he looked tremendous and then he came in and he was running great.”
This past offseason, Cruz signed a seven year extension to stay with the Giants, after getting the franchise tag from the Giants following the 2012 season. So far this season Cruz has lived up to his contract and has helped the Giants win their past two games and save their season in the process.
This Giants who are currently on their by week, will open up their second half of the season against the Oakland Raiders at MetLife Stadium on November 10th.
