Despite leading the Oakland Raiders to their most successful season in seven years, the organization has decided to part ways with head coach Tom Cable.

Head coach Tom Cable, who led the Raiders to their first non-losing season in seven years, will not return next season.

The team announced the decision on Tuesday evening via their official website that Cable’s contract would not be extended. The Raiders had until January 17 to inform Cable whether or not they would exercise his options for 2011 and 2012.

Not long before the announcement was made, Cable spoke on Sirius satellite radio with hosts Bryan McGovern and Marty Schottenheimer. Apparently, Cable was unaware at the time that a decision was made or close to being made, but from the way he spoke, he sounded like a man defeated.

“It’s out of my hands,” said Cable. “I want to be head coach of the Oakland Raiders. If that’s not to be, by someone else’s decision, then I’ll be a head coach somewhere else. If not, I’ll coach the line for somebody and I can do that pretty darn good.”

In their official statement, the team said, “the Raiders express gratitude to Tom Cable for his contributions in his four seasons as an assistant and as Head Coach of the Silver and Black.”

Cable joined the organization in 2007 as an offensive line coach. He became interim head coach after Lane Kiffin was fired four games into the 2008 season. Under Cable’s leadership, the team went 17-27. This season, the Raiders improved dramatically on both sides of the ball, finishing with an 8-8 record. It was the first time the team didn’t lose at least 11 games since going to the Super Bowl in 2002.

The decision comes on the heels of persistent rumors that first-year offensive coordinator is being courted by several teams with vacant head coaching positions. Those rumors were validated when the organization allowed the San Francisco’s 49ers to speak with Jackson, also on Tuesday.

“The 49ers asked and Al [Davis] said yes,” said John Herrera, senior executive with the team.

On December 12, Yahoo! Sports reported that Cable was upset when Jackson was hired during the offseason. “There’s no truth to it,” said Jackson. “We all have a pretty good working relationship.”
